Most of us know about the cankerworm infestation in Charlotte and the resulting aerial assault that took place early last week to turn the tables. The crop dusting planes that traversed the entire Charlotte area sprayed a total of 16,000 gallons of an organic insecticide made from the Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria over 63,000 acres of trees. B. thuringiensis is a natural, soil-dwelling bacterium that has little or no effect on humans, wildlife, pollinators, or most other beneficial insects.

In case you missed out, or are still curious, check out the Observer’s extensive coverage including an infographic on the spraying process and a map of the areas sprayed.
