Charlotte’s unofficial festival season kicks off this weekend with the Charlotte Caribbean Festival and Parade and Pride Charlotte. Most of the city’s cultural festivals are held every year between late July and early October, and include Bon Odori, Charlotte Summer Irish Festival, Festival of India, Yiasou Greek Festival, Blues, Brews, & BBQ, UNC Charlotte I-fest, Charlotte Oktoberfest, Festival Latino Americano, and others. The Charlotte Caribbean Festival and Parade takes place at Independence park on Saturday, located adjacent to Memorial Stadium. The parade begins at Noon in the parking lot of the stadium and winds around the southern side of the park. Performers wear elaborate costumes and there will be plenty of food and music on hand. Pride Charlotte is being held on Saturday at Gateway Village and begins at 11am. The event celebrates the city’s GLBT community and includes a host of food vendors and performers, including Charlotte’s own One Voice Chorus. View our slideshow from the 2008 Pride Charlotte.

Also this weekend is the 24 Hours of Booty, which begins at 7PM on Friday and runs until 7PM on Saturday around the booty loop. Expect a lane of Queens Rd. and Queens Rd. West to be closed and also a stretch of Selwyn Ave. The ride is raising funds for cancer research and always has a crowd on hand to cheer on the participants. Bootyville, the tent city where participants, food, and music can be found, will be located on the sports fields adjacent to Queens University.
