Carolina Christmas: Charlotte Motor Speedway to become winter wonderland

Posted on 18 Oct 2010 by Justin Ruckman

Open nightly from Nov. 22 through Jan. 2, Carolina Christmas will be one of the largest holiday light shows in the United States, featuring nearly 500 different LED, or light emitting diode, light displays, a realistic Bethlehem-themed village, NASCAR souvenir rigs for Christmas shopping, and themed areas for children with food, music, rides and photos with Santa.

We’ve had some spectacular events under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but now we’re adding one million Christmas lights to create a spectacle like people have never seen before,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “This will be a fun and affordable holiday destination for families and we look forward to extending some southern hospitality to our new Christmas guests.”

The LED technology will give a new meaning to the “green” typically associated with Christmas. The highly efficient LED lights use nearly 90 percent less energy and produce a brighter light than incandescent bulbs.

During its 42-night schedule, the displays will use approximately 12,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, less than 10 typical North Carolina households in a given month.
